Research and Development

Research and Development at Oil India Limited serves as a key driver of technological advancement, operational excellence, and sustainable growth. OIL has established two knowledge-based research centres: the Research & Development (R&D) Department at its Field Headquarters in Duliajan, Assam, and the Centre of Excellence for Energy Studies (CoEES) in Guwahati, Assam. Together, these centres provide specialized, innovative, and cost-effective solutions to challenges across the energy sector, supporting OIL's business objectives through scientific research, technology development, and applied engineering. Both centres are recognized by the Department of Scientific and Industrial Research (DSIR), Government of India, while CoEES is also a designated institute for screening and vetting Enhanced Recovery projects under the Government of India's Enhanced Recovery Policy.

As the energy sector is evolving, OIL's R&D efforts are focused on enhancing hydrocarbon recovery, improving operational efficiency, reducing environmental impact, and developing technologies that contribute to the transition towards cleaner and more sustainable energy systems. Through a combination of advanced laboratory capabilities, field-oriented applied research and collaborative innovation, OIL continues to strengthen and support India's energy security while preparing for the opportunities of a changing energy landscape.

R&D Department is equipped with highly sophisticated and advanced laboratory facilities. It is carrying out studies in the highly specialized areas of Petroleum Geochemistry, Oilfield Chemicals, Flow Assurance, Well Stimulation, Improved Oil Recovery, and Petroleum Biotechnology. Considering the world’s energy transition towards net zero energy system, R&D Department has also initiated research in the areas like Nanotechnology, Bio-Hydrogen, Conversion of CO2 to Green Fuels, Compressed Biogas, etc.

Centre of Excellence for Energy Studies

The overarching objective of CoEES is to serve as a centre of innovation, technological advancement and applied research, enabling OIL to progressively attain global parity in terms of technical excellence, technological competence and business performance. The Centre is underpinned by state-of-the-art infrastructure, encompassing industry-standard geological and reservoir modelling and simulation, EOR screening, Petroleum System Modelling, petrophysical interpretation, high-end computational workstations, and sophisticated geological, geochemical and EOR laboratory facilities. These capabilities are complemented by a multidisciplinary cohort of Geologists, Reservoir Engineers and Chemists, fostering an ecosystem conducive to innovation, creativity and the translation of scientific knowledge into practical solutions.

In keeping with the global transition towards a lower-carbon energy paradigm, the Centre has also progressively augmented its portfolio with Carbon Capture, Utilization and Storage (CCUS), including reservoir-specific assessment of CO₂ sequestration and utilization opportunities, thereby contributing to emissions abatement and the development of sustainable and resilient energy pathways. Collectively, the Centre’s expanding technological repertoire and multidisciplinary competencies position CoEES as a strategic knowledge and innovation hub, straddling conventional hydrocarbon value chains, resource augmentation, critical-mineral and geothermal exploration, and emerging low-carbon technologies, thereby strengthening OIL’s technological self-reliance and preparedness for the evolving energy landscape.

CoEES presently operates three highly specialized laboratories, viz. the Geological Laboratory, Advanced Geochemical Laboratory and Enhanced Oil Recovery (EOR) Laboratory, which collectively reinforce its capabilities in subsurface characterization, geochemical investigation and laboratory-scale evaluation of advanced recovery technologies.
