Climate Change and Energy

Oil India Limited (OIL) is committed to achieving net-zero Scope 1 and 2 emissions by 2040 through strategic energy efficiency measures, emissions reduction, and investment in renewables. The company is optimizing operations by upgrading equipment, reducing gas flaring, and expanding renewable energy capacity, targeting 5-5.5 GW by 2040. OIL is advancing green hydrogen, biofuels, and carbon capture projects while aiming for zero routine flaring by 2025 and enhanced water and waste management. Its ESG governance framework ensures climate risk mitigation and aligns with global best practices, reinforcing its role in India’s energy transition.

Biodiversity

OIL prioritizes biodiversity conservation through strategic initiatives like Project Vasundhara, restoring 26 well sites in Assam and 9 in Rajasthan, and reforesting 100 hectares in Digboi with 250,000 indigenous trees. Partnering with the Assam State Biodiversity Board and IUCN, OIL assesses ecological impacts, particularly in Saikhowa National Park. The company also promotes alternative livelihoods through mushroom cultivation and eco-tourism while planting 78,000 saplings at abandoned well sites to sequester 507 tons of CO₂.

Recycle Water

The company prioritizes sustainable water management through Effluent Treatment Plants (ETPs) with an 8,700 KLD capacity, enabling Zero Liquid Discharge (ZLD) compliance via treated water reinjection. The company implements rainwater harvesting, risk mitigation in water-scarce regions like Rajasthan, and promotes recycling in drilling operations. OIL also integrates water efficiency training, reinforcing its commitment to conservation and sustainability.

Circular Economy

OIL focuses on waste management and circular economy initiatives through recycling, bioremediation, and resource recovery. The company treats oily sludge via bioremediation and oil recovery plants while implementing the Bhuvan Mitra waste management system to efficiently process drilling waste and reduce land use for waste pits. OIL also minimizes waste by recycling workover fluids, utilizing sludge recovery plants, and ensuring hazardous waste disposal meets environmental standards.

In-Focus

Adding momentum to the Govt. of India’s ‘Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav’ campaign, OIL India Limited under CSR project Vasundhara ceremoniously launched the mega plantation drive of 2500 nos. of saplings at Bogapani, Digboi Forest Division, Tinsukia District, Assam on 11th June 2022. This was done as part of the ‘Carbon Sequestration and Eco-restoration project’ a CSR initiative of OIL towards eco-restoration of the degraded forest land under Lakhipathar range of Upper Dihing Reserved Forest (West Block).
